New to Extensions? Your First 5 Steps: Start Here
New Stylists: Don’t Skip These 5 Steps — They’ll Save Your Installs
Welcome to the Christian Michael Hair Extensions family! Whether you’re brand new to installing extensions or you’ve dabbled in the past, we’re here to set you up for success from the very first install.
Let’s be real: the first few extension appointments can feel a little overwhelming — so many methods, products, techniques, and tools. But here’s the good news: when you start with the right foundation, you avoid rookie mistakes that lead to slips, damage, and unhappy clients.
Here are the 5 steps we recommend every new stylist take — and why they matter.
✅ Step 1: Clarify the Hair (Yes, Always)
Think of this as your primer before you paint.
Product buildup, oils, and silicones can all interfere with extension bonds. That’s why we always recommend a deep clarifying shampoo (twice!) before installation — especially if you’re working with tape-ins or K-Tips.
💡 Pro Tip: Avoid any conditioning products on the scalp before install. You want a clean slate so your bonds stick and stay secure.
💎 Step 2: Use Only Premium Hair
This is where Christian Michael Hair makes all the difference.
Low-quality hair might look good on day one, but it tangles, mats, and sheds — putting your reputation at risk. That’s why we only use 100% Remy human hair — ethically sourced, double-drawn, and cuticle-intact for a natural look and long-lasting wear.
Clients can feel the difference. And once they do? They won’t settle for anything less.
✂️ Step 3: Master Tension Control
Too tight = damage. Too loose = slipping. Tension is everything.
Every method (whether it’s tape, K-Tip, wefts, or hybrids) requires clean sectioning and consistent tension. If you’re just starting out, slow down, use clean partings, and take your time with placement. You’ll build speed with practice — but never sacrifice technique for speed.

🎨 Step 4: Blend Like a Boss
The install isn’t done until it’s blended. Period.
The biggest giveaway for bad extensions? Harsh lines and chunky ends. We recommend using slide-cutting, point-cutting, or a dry texturizer to melt the extension hair into the natural hair — especially around the face frame and perimeter.
📷 Pro move: Take a photo before and after every install to see where you can improve your blending. It’s how the best stylists level up fast.
💆♀️ Step 5: Give Your Clients Aftercare That Works
The install is just the beginning — client education is the key to retention.
Send your clients home with a clear care routine: how to brush, how to wash, what products to avoid, and when to come back in. We include an aftercare card with every Christian Michael order to help make this part easy for you.
💡 Bonus: Happy clients = referrals. And referrals = booked books.
