About Christian Michael Hair Extensions

What is Christian Michael Hair Extensions?

Christian Michael Hair Extensions (CMHE) is a professional hair extension brand created by hairstylists, for hairstylists and their clients. We offer professional human hair extensions, hair extension tools, multiple extension methods, and professional hair extension education.

Our focus is simple: beautiful hair, thoughtful education, stylist support, and protecting the integrity of the client's natural hair.

Are Christian Michael Hair Extensions real human hair?

Yes. CMHE professional hair extensions are made with 100% Remy human hair.

Are Christian Michael Hair Extensions double drawn?

Yes. CMHE hair extensions are double drawn to provide beautiful fullness throughout the length of the hair.

Can anyone buy Christian Michael Hair Extensions?

Yes. Many CMHE hair extension products are available to everyone. Eligible beauty professionals can also apply for a CMHE PRO account to access professional benefits and pricing.

Do I need a cosmetology license to buy CMHE hair extensions?

You do not need a professional account to purchase eligible retail CMHE products. Professional pricing and certain professional benefits require eligibility for a CMHE PRO account.

What makes Christian Michael Hair Extensions different?

CMHE was built behind the chair by hairstylists who work with hair extensions in the real world.

We believe there is no single extension method that's right for every client. Hair density, texture, length, lifestyle, goals, maintenance, and the health of the natural hair should all be considered before choosing an installation.

And sometimes, the best install is no install.

That's what we mean when we say:

WE TAKE HAIR PERSONALLY.

Choosing the Best Hair Extensions

What is the best type of hair extension?

There isn't one hair extension method that's best for everyone.

The best hair extension method depends on your natural hair density, current length, desired length, lifestyle, maintenance commitment, desired result, and the health of your natural hair.

Depending on the client, a professional stylist may recommend Genius Wefts, Volume Genius Wefts, Tape Wefts, Classic Tape-Ins, K-Tips, Clip-Ins, or a combination of extension methods.

What hair extensions are best for fine hair?

Fine hair requires careful consideration of weight, density, placement, and attachment size.

Depending on the client's natural hair, options may include Classic Tape-Ins, Tape Wefts, K-Tips, Genius Wefts with minimal density, or a customized combination.

More extension hair is not always better for fine hair. The goal should be creating the desired result while respecting what the natural hair can safely support.

What hair extensions are best for medium-density hair?

Medium-density hair can often accommodate several extension methods, including Genius Wefts, Tape Wefts, Classic Tape-Ins, and K-Tips.

The amount of natural hair placed within an attachment and the overall weight of the installation still matter. Your stylist should customize the application based on your individual density.

What hair extensions are best for thick hair?

Thick hair can often accommodate Genius Wefts, Volume Genius Wefts, Tape Wefts, Classic Tape-Ins, K-Tips, or customized multi-method installations.

Because thick hair may require more extension hair to create a seamless blend, your stylist should consider your starting length, haircut, density, and desired result.

Can you put hair extensions in short hair?

Yes! Hair extensions can be installed on shorter hair, including some chin-length hair, when the client's natural hair and density are appropriate.

Short-to-long transformations can require significantly more hair and strategic placement to conceal the shorter natural layers.

Depending on the client, a stylist may use Tape Wefts, Genius Wefts, K-Tips, or a combination of methods to create the most seamless result.

Can hair extensions be used just for volume?

Absolutely.

Hair extensions don't have to dramatically increase your length. They can be used to fill in thinner areas, create density through the ends, or simply make your natural hair appear fuller.

Can I get hair extensions without adding length?

Yes. Extensions can be cut to your natural length and used specifically to create fullness and density.

What is the least damaging hair extension method?

There isn't one universally "damage-free" extension method.

The health of the natural hair depends on proper consultation, method selection, weight, placement, installation, maintenance, home care, and professional removal.

An extension method that works beautifully for one person may not be appropriate for another.

Do hair extensions damage your natural hair?

Properly selected, installed, maintained, and removed extensions should prioritize the integrity of your natural hair.

Damage can occur when extensions are too heavy for the natural hair, improperly installed, poorly maintained, worn beyond the recommended maintenance schedule, or incorrectly removed.

How Many Packs of Hair Extensions Do I Need?

How many packs of hair extensions do I need for a full head?

The amount of hair extensions you need depends on your natural hair density, starting length, desired length, haircut, head size, extension method, and desired result.

The following CMHE guide is a general starting point.

Fine Hair

Short to long: 3–4 packs
Medium to long: 2–3 packs
Adding density/fullness: 1–2 packs

Medium Hair

Short to long: 4–6 packs
Medium to long: 3–5 packs
Adding density/fullness: 2–3 packs

Thick Hair

Short to long: 5–7 packs
Medium to long: 4–6 packs
Adding density/fullness: 2–3 packs

How do I know which number within the pack range I need?

Consider how dramatic your transformation will be.

For example, someone with short, blunt, thick hair who wants very long hair will generally require more extension hair than someone with medium-length hair who simply wants additional fullness.

Your stylist also needs to consider how much extension weight your natural hair can appropriately support.

More hair is not always better.

Is one pack of hair extensions enough?

One pack may be appropriate when adding targeted density or fullness to certain clients, but it generally will not provide enough hair for a dramatic length transformation.

Is 50 grams of hair extensions enough?

It can be enough for targeted fullness on certain clients, but 50 grams may not be enough for a complete length transformation.

How many grams of hair extensions do I need?

There isn't one universal number.

A fine-haired client with medium-length natural hair may require considerably less hair than someone with short, thick hair wanting a dramatic increase in length.

Rather than choosing an amount based on grams alone, your stylist should consider your density, starting length, desired result, method, and the amount of weight your natural hair can safely support.

Can CMHE tell me how many packs of hair extensions I need?

We can help guide you.

Your installing stylist should ultimately determine the amount of hair needed because they can physically assess your natural hair, density, haircut, and desired result.

Genius Weft Hair Extensions

What are Genius Weft hair extensions?

Genius Wefts are thin, flexible professional hair extension wefts held together by hand done stitching methods utilizing a polyurethane base designed to allow stylists to customize an installation based on the client's head shape, density, and desired result.

Can Genius Wefts be cut?

Yes. Genius Wefts can be customized by a trained professional to fit the installation.

Can Genius Weft extensions be reused?

Yes. Genius Wefts may be reused as long as the extension hair remains in good condition and your stylist determines it is appropriate for reinstallation.

How often do Genius Weft extensions need to be moved up?

Most weft clients require maintenance approximately every 6–8 weeks.

Your individual maintenance schedule may vary based on natural hair growth, density, installation, and your stylist's recommendation.

What is a Volume Genius Weft?

CMHE Volume Genius Wefts provide additional density for clients and stylists who need more hair within a weft application.

Are Volume Genius Wefts good for fine hair?

no.

Tape Weft Hair Extensions

What are Tape Weft hair extensions?

Tape Wefts combine a wider weft-style application with an adhesive attachment system, giving trained stylists another option for creating customized hair extension installations.

How long do Tape Weft extensions last before maintenance?

Tape Wefts generally require maintenance approximately every 6–8 weeks, depending on natural hair growth and your stylist's recommendation.

Can Tape Weft hair extensions be reused?

Yes. Tape Weft hair may be reused when it remains in good condition and is properly removed and prepared for reinstallation.

Can I install Tape Wefts myself?

Professional Tape Wefts should be installed by a stylist who is properly trained in the method.

Why are my Tape Weft extensions slipping?

Tape Weft slipping can be related to several factors, including hair preparation, installation technique, oils or conditioning products near the adhesive, product buildup, or aftercare.

If you're experiencing excessive slipping, contact your installing stylist so the cause can be evaluated.

Classic Tape-In Hair Extensions

What are Tape-In hair extensions?

Tape-In hair extensions use adhesive tabs to attach extension hair around carefully selected sections of the client's natural hair.

How often do Tape-In extensions need maintenance?

Tape-In extensions typically require maintenance approximately every 6–8 weeks.

Can Tape-In hair extensions be reused?

Yes. When the extension hair remains in good condition, Tape-Ins can be professionally removed, prepared, retabbed, and reinstalled.

Can I put conditioner on Tape-In extensions?

Yes, but avoid applying conditioner directly to the adhesive attachment area.

Can I use hair oil with Tape-In extensions?

Yes. Hair oil may be used appropriately through the mids and ends, but avoid applying oil directly to the Tape-In adhesive.

Why are my Tape-In extensions falling out?

Tape-In slipping can be caused by several factors, including installation, preparation of the natural hair, oils, conditioning products, product buildup, or aftercare.

Contact your stylist rather than attempting to repair the Tape-Ins yourself.

K-Tip Hair Extensions

What are K-Tip hair extensions?

K-Tips are individual hair extensions attached to small sections of natural hair using a keratin-based bond.

Because individual bonds can be strategically placed throughout the head, K-Tips allow stylists to customize density and placement.

How long do K-Tip extensions last?

Many clients wear K-Tip extensions for approximately 10–12 weeks before professional removal or maintenance is needed.

Your stylist may recommend a different schedule.

Can I remove K-Tip extensions myself?

We strongly recommend professional K-Tip removal to protect the natural hair.

Can I use oil on K-Tip extensions?

Oil may be used appropriately through the mids and ends, but avoid applying oils and heavy conditioning products directly to the K-Tip bonds.

Why are my K-Tip extensions shedding?

Some shedding can occur during normal extension wear. Excessive shedding should be evaluated by your stylist or the CMHE team.

Do not attempt to glue or repair K-Tip bonds yourself.

Clip-In Hair Extensions

Does Christian Michael Hair Extensions sell Clip-Ins?

Yes. CMHE offers human hair Clip-In extensions for clients looking for temporary, removable length and volume.

Are Clip-In hair extensions permanent?

No. Clip-In extensions are designed to be applied and removed as needed.

Are Clip-Ins a good alternative to permanent hair extensions?

Absolutely.

Clip-Ins can be a great option for someone who wants additional hair without committing to the cost and maintenance associated with a semi-permanent extension installation.

Can I sleep in Clip-In extensions?

We recommend removing your Clip-In extensions before sleeping.

Can I wash Clip-In extensions?

Yes. Clip-Ins don't need to be washed as frequently as your natural hair. Wash them only as needed using appropriate hair extension products.

Hair Toppers

What is a hair topper?

A hair topper is designed to provide additional coverage and density through the top area of the hair.

What is the difference between a hair topper and hair extensions?

Traditional extensions primarily add length and density through the sides and back of the hair.

A topper provides additional coverage closer to the top of the head.

Can I wear a hair topper and hair extensions together?

In some cases, yes.

A stylist can determine whether combining a topper with extensions is appropriate for your natural hair and desired result.

How do I choose the right hair topper?

The correct topper depends on the area requiring coverage, natural density, hair color, and desired result.

Contact CMHE or a trained stylist if you need help determining which topper is right for you.

Hair Extension Color Matching

How do I choose the right hair extension color?

Hair extensions should generally be matched primarily to your mid-lengths and ends, rather than automatically matching your root color.

Many seamless extension transformations use two or more shades to recreate the natural dimension in the client's hair.

Should hair extensions match my roots?

Not necessarily.

Because most extensions live through the lengths and ends, the extension colors primarily need to blend with those areas.

Can Christian Michael Hair Extensions color match my hair?

Yes. Our team can help guide you with color selection.

For the best color match, provide clear photos of your hair taken in indirect natural daylight without filters.

What pictures should I take for a hair extension color match?

Send clear photos showing your hair from the:

  • Front

  • Back

  • Left side

  • Right side

Use indirect natural daylight and avoid filters or strongly colored artificial lighting.

Can I mix two hair extension colors?

Absolutely.

Using multiple extension shades can create beautiful dimension and often produces an even more seamless result.

Can I tone hair extensions?

Human hair extensions may be professionally toned, but extension hair has already undergone processing.

Chemical services can affect the hair, so always perform a strand test first.

Can I color hair extensions darker?

An experienced stylist may be able to deposit darker color onto human hair extensions.

Always strand test first.

Can I bleach or lighten hair extensions?

We do not recommend bleaching or lightening CMHE extension hair.

Extension hair has already undergone processing, and additional lightening can compromise the integrity of the hair.

Can I use purple shampoo on hair extensions?

Use purple shampoo and other pigmented products cautiously.

Hair extensions can absorb pigment differently than natural hair and may become overly cool, dull, purple, blue, or uneven.

Hair Extension Aftercare

How often should I wash my hair extensions?

For many extension clients, washing approximately twice per week is a good general guideline unless your stylist recommends otherwise.

Can I wash hair extensions every day?

Frequent washing can shorten the lifespan of extension hair.

Follow the washing schedule recommended by your stylist based on your scalp, lifestyle, and extension method.

What shampoo should I use on hair extensions?

Use a high-quality sulfate free, extension-appropriate shampoo recommended by your stylist.

Can I use conditioner on hair extensions?

Yes.

Apply conditioner primarily through the mids and ends and avoid the attachment areas unless your stylist specifically instructs otherwise.

Can I use a hair mask on extensions?

Yes. Apply masks primarily through the mids and ends while avoiding extension attachment points. Avoid protein based masks.

Can I use hair oil on extensions?

Yes. Hair oil can be used appropriately through the mids and ends.

Avoid applying oil directly to extension attachment points.

Hair oil should only be applied once a week.

Can I use dry shampoo with hair extensions?

Yes, when appropriate.

Choose an extension-friendly product and avoid excessive buildup around the attachment areas.

Drying Hair Extensions

Can I air-dry my hair extensions?

We recommend thoroughly drying the roots and attachment areas after washing.

Leaving extension attachment areas wet for extended periods can contribute to tangling, matting, and other maintenance issues.

Do I need to blow-dry the roots of my hair extensions?

We recommend thoroughly drying your roots and extension attachment areas after washing.

Can I sleep with wet hair extensions?

No.

Your natural hair and extension attachment areas should be completely dry before sleeping.

Brushing, Tangling & Matting

How often should I brush hair extensions?

Brush your extensions consistently throughout the day as needed, especially before washing and before bed.

What brush should I use for hair extensions?

Use an extension-friendly brush designed to move through the hair without aggressively pulling on the attachment points. We recommend using our best damn brush you will ever use.

How should I brush my hair extensions?

Support the hair with one hand, begin brushing at the ends, and gently work upward.

Take extra care around extension attachment areas.

Why are my hair extensions tangling?

Tangling can be related to dryness, product buildup, sleeping with wet hair, inadequate brushing, environmental exposure, chemical services, or normal wear.

If your extensions are excessively tangling, contact your stylist or CMHE.

Why are my hair extensions matting at the roots?

Naturally shed hair can remain trapped within an extension installation.

Without proper separation, brushing, drying, and maintenance, this can contribute to tangling or matting near the attachment areas.

Should I cut matting out of my hair extensions?

No.

Have your stylist handle significant matting so you don't accidentally cut or damage your natural hair.

Sleeping With Hair Extensions

How should I sleep with hair extensions?

Go to bed with completely dry hair and gently secure your extensions to reduce friction and tangling while you sleep. We recommend sleeping in a CM Satin Bonnet.

Should I wear a bonnet with hair extensions?

A bonnet can be a great addition to your extension aftercare routine because it helps reduce friction while sleeping.

Can I sleep with my hair extensions down?

We recommend gently securing your hair in a CM Satin Bonnet before bed to help minimize tangling.

Swimming, Sunscreen & Hair Extensions

Can I swim with hair extensions?

Yes, but swimming exposes extension hair to chlorine, salt water, minerals, sunscreen, and additional tangling.

Take extra precautions and properly care for your extensions afterward.

Can I swim in the ocean with hair extensions?

Yes.

Secure your hair, minimize tangling, and properly cleanse and dry your extensions afterward.

Can I swim in a pool with hair extensions?

Yes, but chlorine can affect extension hair.

Minimize exposure whenever possible and follow proper extension aftercare.

Can sunscreen discolor blonde hair extensions?

Yes.

Certain sunscreens and environmental factors can contribute to discoloration of lighter hair extension shades. Avoid any sunscreens with Avobenzone. We recommend mineral only sunscreens.

Avoid getting sunscreen directly on your extensions whenever possible.

Why did my blonde hair extensions turn orange or pink?

Light-colored extensions can experience discoloration from environmental exposure, minerals, products, water quality, sunscreen ingredients, and other factors.

Contact your stylist before attempting aggressive corrective treatments at home.

Working Out With Hair Extensions

Can I work out with hair extensions?

Absolutely.

Is sweat bad for hair extensions?

Sweating is normal.

Follow your stylist's recommendations for keeping your scalp and attachment areas clean and dry.

Can I wear a ponytail with hair extensions?

Usually, yes.

Avoid excessively tight hairstyles that create unnecessary tension on your natural hair or extension attachment points.

Hair Extension Lifespan & Maintenance

How long do Christian Michael Hair Extensions last?

With proper professional installation, maintenance, and home care, CMHE extension hair can commonly last approximately 9 months.

Actual lifespan varies based on lifestyle, color, chemical services, heat styling, environmental exposure, products, and individual wear.

Can I leave my hair extensions installed for 9 months?

No.

The lifespan of the extension hair and the maintenance schedule of the installation are two completely different things.

Your extensions still need professional maintenance or removal according to your specific method.

How often do hair extensions need maintenance?

As a general guideline:

Tape methods: approximately 6–8 weeks
Weft methods: approximately 6–8 weeks
K-Tips: approximately 10–12 weeks

Your stylist may recommend a different maintenance schedule.

What happens if I wait too long between hair extension appointments?

As your natural hair grows and sheds, the extension attachment moves farther away from the scalp.

Waiting too long between appointments can contribute to excessive grow-out, tangling, matting, tension, and more difficult maintenance.

What makes hair extensions wear out faster?

Factors that can shorten the lifespan of extension hair include:

  • Excessive heat

  • Chemical processing

  • Improper haircare products

  • Frequent washing

  • Chlorine

  • Salt water

  • Sunscreen and environmental exposure

  • Poor maintenance

  • Sleeping with wet hair

  • Improper brushing

Hair Extension Shedding & Troubleshooting

Is it normal for hair extensions to shed?

A small amount of shedding can occur with normal extension wear.

Why are my hair extensions shedding a lot?

Excessive shedding should be evaluated.

Contact your stylist or CMHE with your order information, installation date, extension method, aftercare routine, and clear photos or videos showing what you're experiencing.

My hair extensions feel dry. What should I do?

Extension hair doesn't receive natural oils from the scalp in the same way your natural hair does, making proper aftercare extremely important.

If you're experiencing unusual or excessive dryness, contact your stylist or CMHE so we can help determine what's happening.

Why did my hair extensions change color?

Minerals, water quality, environmental exposure, chemical services, pigmented products, sunscreen, and other factors can affect extension color.

Contact your stylist or CMHE before attempting to chemically correct your extensions.

Coloring Hair Extensions

Can I dye human hair extensions?

Professional deposit-only coloring may be possible, but extension hair has already undergone processing.

Always perform a strand test first.

Can I make hair extensions darker?

A trained professional may be able to deposit darker color onto human hair extensions.

Strand testing is strongly recommended.

Can I make hair extensions lighter?

We do not recommend bleaching or lightening CMHE hair extensions.

Hair Extension Installation & Finding a Stylist

Can I install hair extensions myself?

Professional hair extension products should be installed by a properly trained stylist unless the product is specifically designed for self-application, such as Clip-Ins.

Can my regular hairstylist install CMHE hair extensions?

Your stylist should be properly trained in the specific extension method they are performing.

How do I find a hair extension stylist near me?

Does Christian Michael Hair Extensions employ the stylists on the Stylist Locator?

Hair Extensions & Natural Hair Safety

Can I get hair extensions if I have hair loss?

Hair loss has many possible causes, and whether extensions are appropriate needs to be assessed individually.

We recommend speaking with an appropriate healthcare professional about unexplained hair loss and having an experienced extension stylist assess whether your natural hair can appropriately support extensions.

Is it normal for hair extensions to hurt after installation?

Significant or persistent pain should not be ignored.

Contact your installing stylist promptly so the installation can be assessed.

Why do my hair extensions feel too tight?

Contact your stylist.

A hair extension installation should not cause significant or persistent pain.

Can I be allergic to hair extensions?

Reactions can have multiple potential causes, and CMHE cannot diagnose an allergy.

If you believe you're experiencing a reaction, contact an appropriate healthcare professional for medical guidance and let your stylist know what you're experiencing.

Why is my scalp red after getting hair extensions?

Scalp redness can have multiple possible causes, and we cannot diagnose the cause through an FAQ.

Contact your stylist and, when appropriate, an appropriate healthcare professional.
